Gingerbread Houses

We sharpened our retelling skills by reading several versions of the Gingerbread man right before winter break!  We enjoyed identifying the various characters, settings, and solutions in each story.  It was a fun and engaging way to learn about story elements.  We culminated the unit making gingerbread houses with our buddies.  Thanks for all the donations!

Snow Much Fun!

Last week we had a visit from Snowball the Snowman. He stopped by to check up on us and make sure we were all working hard and being great listeners.  At night, he seems to always find a little mischief...but in the morning he always brings a smile to each little face that walks through the door!

Sink or Float?

Last week we worked with our buddies as we explored our pumpkins.
We discovered that we were very surprised that our pumpkins floated...even the big ones!
We were left with a lot of questions!

To get some answers, we paired up with Mrs. Kirn's Class, made some predictions about cut up pumpkins, and then we experimented!  The results continued to amaze us!

During Writer's Workshop this quarter, we have all become writers!  We have learned many skills that good writers use.  We have looked at mentor text and have gathered a lot of ideas for ways to make our writing better!
We celebrated on Friday with a Publishing Party.  We shared our writing with other kindergarten classes and they shared their writing with us!
When you come into the building, you will find our books proudly displayed in the hallway.

This week we are learning all about what science is and what scientists do. We have learned that scientists ask questions, observe, record data, and make predictions. With the help of our 5th grade buddies, we predicted how many drops of water we could put on a penny. Then we observed and recorded the results.

Choosing Just Right Books

Some books are too small, some are too big, and others are JUST RIGHT!

If you have recently noticed your kindergartener holding up fingers while reading, there is a good reason for it!  He or she is trying to determine if the book they are reading is a good fit or a just right book!  A just right book is a book that challenges them to use some of their reading strategies,  and is one that they can understand, share their thinking and enjoy reading!  Ask your child to tell you more about just right books!

Guess who is coming to our room????

We have been learning to infer or predict.  When we infer, we use word or picture clues and our schema to figure out something the author does not tell us.  Today we read clues and tried to infer who was going to be visiting our classroom this week. Here are the clues we read:
This photo gives you a clue in case you could not infer who are guests will be...
We read the first half of the clues and made a prediction. Then we read the rest of the clues.  You can see by our work, that many of us changed our inferences when we had more information.

Backwards Day!

Thursday was a crazy day!  Everything was backwards!!  We earned this special treat for bringing in canned goods earlier in the year.

We began the craziness by wearing pajamas to school.  What could be more backward that that?

Well, maybe starting our day with our goodbye song, or math and special class in the morning, or even the Harlem Shake?? That's right...Our buddies invited us to read as usual on Thursday but they wanted to shake things up a little.  So we joined them in the Harlem Shake!
Enjoy these videos!

Dr. Seuss' Birthday

We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday a little early this year.  His actual birthday fell on Saturday, but we could not let this important day pass by without a little celebration and fun.  We spent the day on Friday reading some of his books and doing activities to honor and remember this great author and illustrator.  I hope you enjoy this quick view of our day.
